EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
