This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
